  1. The Ten Step Action Planning Guide for the SMHQAQ Nancy A. Lever, Ph.D. & Sharon H. Stephan, Ph.D. Center for School Mental Health University of Maryland, Baltimore

  2. Step One Identify a team of at least four stakeholders to assess the quality of mental health services and programming within your school or district. Potential members could include: • School Psychologist • School Social Worker • Guidance Counselor • Expanded School Mental Health Clinician • Family Member/Advocate • Student Support Team Leader • PBIS Leaders • Educator

  3. Step Two Have each individual complete the SMHQAQ independently. Take a moment to think about the mental health priorities for the school or district and about strengths and weaknesses in your school’s or district’s mental health services and programming.

  4. Step Three Set up a 45-60 minute strategic planning meeting in which the team will discuss the findings from the survey and will develop an action plan for the school year.

  5. Step Four Discuss your perspectives on the most pressing mental health issues within your school or district and review your responses to the SMHQAQ. Develop a consensus around which indicators on the SMHQAQ would be most relevant to your school or district. Select one or two indicators to focus on during the school year.

  6. Step Five Develop an Action Plan that outlines at least three action steps/strategies that will help your school or district improve around the one or two selected quality indicators. Be specific--Identify whom, what, when, and how within your plan.

  7. Step Six If your selected quality indicators do not address family and/or youth engagement, agree on one strategy to enhance family and/or youth engagement at your school or within your district.

  8. Step Seven Develop a clear action plan around the above strategy to enhance family and youth involvement at your school. Be creative and seek input from youth and families.

  9. Step Eight Consider what may prevent you from getting this important work done. Discuss as a group strategies that could help you to overcome these barriers.

  10. Step Nine Agree as a team how to best follow-up with one another and how to incorporate this agenda into other teams and committees at the school

  11. Step Ten Evaluate your progress regularly and agree as a team how to best update/modify the action plan (e.g., monthly meetings, email communication, discussions)

  12. Congratulations on yourteam effort!
