HOW TO WRITE THE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION AND ESSAY • Writing and Reading Center Provides: • Help with the scholarship essay • Assistance with application elaboration • Guidance in writing for a specific audience • Management of application structure • Assistance in developing Thank You letter Next Step: The Writing & Reading Center

  5. Personal statements should reveal what is not expressed in application, transcript, or recommendation letter. • Be sure to address all parts of the question. Follow what the question asks. • Be aware of length requirements and scope of your topic. • Tailor your work for specific audiences. Understand scholarship and sponsor Focus on personal qualities that identify with specified scholarship Consider SubjectandContent

  6. Quality candidates demonstrate: • Academic ability and achievement • Consistent or improved academic performance • Academic honors and special awards • Contributions to the community • Work experiences • Family responsibilities Committees Search For Quality Candidates

  7. Be focused • Avoid random thoughts • Create threads amid your accomplishments and overall goal • Does the essay truly reflect who you are? (Tone, voice, and subject) • Honesty is the best policy, not always: • Discuss certain life challenges and obstacles but omit certain personal issues that may be inappropriate • Developing your best persona • Refrain from over confidence and cockiness • Establish your accomplishments and best traits but also show an understanding of humility Keep In Mind
