Secondary School Transfer - September 2013 Key Dates 2013-14 • 11 September – Application Packs Issued • 14, 21 September – 11+ tests • 11 October – Grammar schools notify parents of 11+ results • 31 October (12 noon) –Applications close • 03 March – Offer of school place posted by LA or view online • 04 March – Grammar schools write to parents • 17 March – Latest date to accept or refuse offer National Junior School - 12.09.13

  7. Secondary School Transfer - September 2013 In Lincolnshire for the past few years over 90% of parents were successful in obtaining a place for their child at the school they preferred National Junior School - 12.09.13

  8. Secondary School Transfer - September 2013 Parents • Some had clearly made decisions without taking advice • Some failed to grasp the significance of 1st preference and oversubscription • No preference offered (0.5%) – disappointment and anger National Junior School - 12.09.13

Secondary School Transfer - September 2013 Role of the LA • Co-ordinates the scheme • Communicates directly with parents for application and offer • Provides information to parents • Allocates best offer and makes offer to parents on behalf of school • Monitors process to ensure scheme is followed • Advises schools and parents on all aspects of admissions National Junior School - 12.09.13

Curriculum • After SATs, work becomes more project based and children are expected to work independently and collaboratively to research and make decisions about how to present findings • Literacy framework incorporates all aspects, each unit follows the same pattern, reading → writing → speaking It looks at all types of text, including ICT texts, and all types of writing • Maths framework focuses on one aspect at a time and is very much concerned with putting Maths in context National Junior School - 12.09.13

  13. Curriculum • Science: Focus is on science in the real world, making links to everyday living. Topics include Electricity, How We See Things, Forces in Action and Changing Materials Healthy living, Micro Organisms • ICT: On-going use of ICT across the curriculum plus skills lessons and esafety National Junior School - 12.09.13

Curriculum • History: Ancient Greece during terms 1 and 2 Britain Since 1930’s during terms 5 and 6 • Geography: Coastlines during terms 3 and 4 Passport to the World throughout the year • Art: Landscapes during terms 1 and 2 3d textures –coastlines during terms3 and4 Cubism and Futurism during terms 5 and 6 National Junior School - 12.09.13

  15. Homework Timetable • Monday English and talk homework • Tuesday Maths • Everyday Reading 30 – 40mins per subject Reading Logs & Diaries will be checked by staff every Friday National Junior School - 12.09.13

How you can help – before SATs Week • Discuss the work children are doing at school • Encourage a range of reading material all year and talk to children about their reading • Take every opportunity to apply Mathematical skills to everyday situations – shopping, baking, measuring etc National Junior School - 12.09.13

How you can help – SATs Week • Encourage, be positive, assure children they can only do their best • Plan for a week free from late nights – aim for a good night’s sleep every night • Ensure children have a good breakfast each morning (free breakfast provided at school that week!) • Talk to children each evening and ask how things went National Junior School - 12.09.13
