  14. to Unit2Concentration and Interruption Part C Topic Discuss

  15. Unit2Concentration and Interruption CUSTOMS INSPECTION The personal property that passengers take with them on a trip is called baggage, or luggage. For people who work on airlines there are three kinds of baggage. One is the hand or carry-on luggage that people take with them into the passenger cabin of the aircraft. Then there is the baggage that is carried in the special baggage compartment of the passengers plane. This is called “checked baggage”. A third kind of luggage is called “unaccompanied baggage”. It may not go on the same plane with the passenger, the owner of the baggage. Sometimes a person will make a stop somewhere in the middle of the trip but will send the luggage on to the final stop.

  16. Unit2Concentration and Interruption Once you reach the airport at your final destination, at the far end of the hall are several  short conveyor belts1,waist high-People p|ace their carry-on luggage on these conveyor belts, which carry the bags to a counter where they are inspected,or examined,by the customs inspectors. Simon Clark is one of the customs inspectors behind the counter. His job is to examine the contents of all baggage brought into the country and to watch for contrabandz and smugglers. However,he must be a diplomat in his job.He knows that most travelers and tourists are not smugglers. His country does not tax the personal belongings visitors or tourists bring into the country. The country is anxious for tourists to enjoy its hospitality. Most tourists bring only personal things they will need for their trip. They do not bring things for resale. Instead, they usually buy the country's products to remember the trip or to take home as gifts.

  17. CUSTOMS DECLARATION A: Your passport please, sir. B: One second please. lt's in my bag. Here it is. A: Have you anything to declare? B: l'm not sure. l have some gifts for my friends. A: What are they? B: Some bottles of perfume and 4 bottles of whisky. A: Oh, that's more than we can allow you free. I'm afraid you’ll have to pay some duty on them. B: AH right. A: Now, would you please open your suitcase for examination? B: Of course. A: I'm afraid these books are prohibited entry. You can 1eave them at our checkroom and pick them up when you leave China. B: OK. A: Very well. You have passed the customs. Here's your passport-Hope you'll have a pleasant stay in China.

  18. Unit2Concentration and Interruption Read the passage. Then compare notes and discuss these questions with your group or partner. 1. Why does the author say“Mr.Clark must be a diplomat in his job"? 2. Do you think it necessary to inspect the tourists, baggage carefully? Why? 3. Why do people have to declare their belongings while coming through customs? 4. Have you heard of any story about smuggling? If you have, tell it to your group or class.

  20. Amazon

  21. The Amazon Rainforest is the world’s greatest natural resource—the most powerful and bio-actively diverse natural phenomenon on the planet. Yet still it is being destroyed just like other rainforests around the world. The problem and the solution to rainforest destruction are both economic. Rainforests are being destroyed worldwide for the profits they yield—mostly harvesting unsustainable resources like timber, for cattle and agriculture, and for subsistence cropping by rainforest inhabitants.

  22. DDiscussion Questions: • Do you enjoy the beauty of the rain forest where different kinds of animals live in harmony with each other? What can human being do to protect that? • What do you think of the statement “we human being and other species share the same globe”?

  23. 3. Work in pairs to discuss what ecology is? Ecology is the study of the relationships among plants, animals, people, and their environment and the balance among these relationships. An ecologist may study the behavior of individuals. Among the characteristics studied would be the food-gathering techniques of individuals, the survival adaptations against predation, etc.

  24. 4. Work in pairs to discuss what environment is? Environment is the complex of physical, chemical and biotic factors that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival.
