  8. Isaiah 61:1-2 45 Isaiah’s Prophecy Fulfilled “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” • “To preach the Gospel to the poor” (Cf. Matt 5:3) • “To proclaim release to the captives” (Cf. John 8:32-36) • “To set free those who are downtrodden” (Cf. Matt 11:28-30) • “To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord” (Cf. Matt 3:2) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me.” (Luke 3:22) Jesus stopped reading in the middle of verse 2 because “the favorable year of the Lord” related to His first coming as king. “The day of vengeance of our God” will be fulfilled at His second coming when He comes as judge.

  9. 45 Rejection in Nazareth • The message: “I am the one Isaiah said would come.” (Isa 61:1,2) • The Issue: Faith that Jesus was sent from God • Precedent: Unbelief in the Northern Kingdom: • Elijah supplied a Sidonian woman. (1 Kings 17) • Elisha healed a Syrian general. (2 Kings 5) • Implication: If not received (believed) by Israel, Jesus would also go to the Gentiles. • Response: anger – unbelief – rejection – attack

  23. 46 Jesus’ Move to Capernaum • Located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee 20 miles from Nazareth, Capernaum was the center of the Galilean fishing industry. • Capernaum was the home of Peter and Andrew (originally from Bethsaida), and John and James, sons of Zebedee. • A Roman garrison was stationed at Capernaum. • Capernaum became the base for Jesus’ Galilean ministry. • Jesus taught and healed in the Capernaum synagogue on the Sabbath without opposition. • The location of Capernaum provided maximum contact with the people of Galilee and beyond, including those traveling between Egypt and Mesopotamia on a road that passed near the town.

  24. Matt 4:13-15 46 NW Roman garrison Capernaum “And leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. “This was to fulfill what was spoken of through the Isaiah the prophet, the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.” (Q: Isaiah 9:1-2) (Nazareth was in the tribal region of Zebulun and Capernaum in the region of Naphtali.)

  32. Points to Ponder • Why do you think that Jesus returned directly to Cana from Samaria? • Write a script: The conversation among Jesus’ disciples on their journey back to Cana • How do you think Jesus and His followers would have been received when they returned to Cana? • Why was Jesus rejected in Nazareth? • Why did the group travel from Cana to Nazareth and then to Capernaum? • Why was Jesus’ move to Capernaum important to His ministry?
