  2. Solving Work Problems • To solve work problems, such as mowing lawns and cleaning houses, you must use the following formula: • (Work Rate)(Time)= Work Done • Work Rate: Amount of a job that can be completed in a given amount of time

  3. Example: • One faucet can fill a tank in 10 minutes, while a different faucet will take 15 minutes to fill the exact same tank. If the two faucets filled the same tank in what amount of time would they finish?

  4. Steps: • Step 1: • Faucet 1- 1/10 Faucet 2- 1/15 • You have to find their common denominators. • 10 and 15 have 30 in common • So, now it’s 3/30 and 2/30 • When you add them together, you get 5/30 • Now you divide and you get 6

  5. Tim De La Goatee’s servant (Oswaldo) can clean his room in 3 hours, but with all his servants they can clean the room in 1 hour working together how long would it take them to clean Tim De La Goatee’s room. Example 1

  6. t × t × 3 3 1 × 3 t × 3t = 4t 3 3 3 (3) 4t = (3) 1 4t = 3 3 4 4 Answer: 7.5

  7. Example 2 Solve on your own. • Working alone, Dan can sweep a porch in 15 minutes. Alberto can sweep the same porch in 11 minutes. If they worked together how long would it take them?
