DOG BREEDS • It is estimated that there are over 500 different dog breeds in the world. • Two organizations which promote breed standards are the AKC (American Kennel Club) and the UKC (United Kennel Club). • The AKC recognizes over 150 different breeds while the UKC currently recognizes over 300 separate breeds.

  3. DOG BREEDS • AKC Recognized Breeds are assigned to one of seven groups or the Miscellaneous Class, based on the uses for which the breeds were developed. • UKC Recognized Breeds are assigned to one of eight groups, based on the uses for which the breeds were developed.
