  1. BYOT“Bring Your Own Technology” BYOT is a new trend in education that encourages students to bring and use their own personal mobile technology, including smartphones, tablet devices and laptops, into the classroom to use for educational purposes. Personal technology includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, smartphones, laptops, tablet devices, Netbooks, notebooks, iPads, iPods, Kindles, NOOKs, PDAs, mp3 players, wireless earpieces, and portable gaming devices.

  2. School Board Policy • Students may use BYOT devices: • During instructional time: students are permitted to use personal technology resources during class time for educational use only and with teacher permission. • During extracurricular time: students are permitted to use personal technology resources during extracurricular time for educational use only and with coach/sponsor permission. • Additional guidelines have been developed, and more information can be found on the BYOT website: www.svsd.net/byotguidelines

  3. When Will I Use BYOT? • Teachers will determine when the use of personal technology is appropriate for use in their classroom. Some of your teachers may choose to participate, others may not. • Students may bring personal technology devices to school if they choose. Participation is completely voluntary. Students without personal technology devices will not be excluded from educational activities. • Student participation in BYOT is a privilege which can be lost for irresponsible use.

  4. What are some key guidelines? • For accountability, students must register their personal devices at http://byot.svsd.net before connecting to the school's wireless system. The school’s internet safety policy and all school rules still apply. • The use of social media is strictly prohibited for non-educational use. • The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices.  • Students should keep their personal devices on mute. Phone calls and text messages should not interrupt instruction.

  5. Guidelines At SVMS • No device use during breakfast, lunch, hallway/change of classes. When moving from a class using BYOT to another, student devices must be stored in lockers for the safety of your device and to ensure use during educational times only! • Device use in study halls only when given permission by the teacher and for educational purposes only. • Using your device to contact parents when you are sick or otherwise is still not permitted. Please see the nurse if you do not feel well or the office if you need to call home. KEY IDEA: You must ALWAYS be granted permission by a TEACHER to use BYOT.

  6. How to Register Your Device • Go to the DISTRICT page: www.svsd.net • Click on the “Academics” tab, then “BYOT”. • Use the links here to register and find help. • You need to register your device on your own at home! It will take 24 hours to activate. If you run into problems after that you can see Dr. Nagy in homeroom.
