  3. Indus Valley Civilization • Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were two ancient cities • Brick Buildings • Sanitation Systems • Aryans ruled the region after these civilizations fell • Later, this region was ruled by the Mauryan, Gupta, and Mughal Empires • Who ruled this area next?

  4. Partition/War • After Independence was granted by Great Britain, India was split into what two countries? • Pakistan was separated by 1,100 miles of India • West and East Pakistan shared a religious bond but had ethnic differences. • How was this resolved?

Struggling Economies • Similarities between Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh • All depend on agriculture • Per capita income is low in all three • Large population of all three lives in Poverty • Industry in Pakistan and Bangladesh • Both are attempting to increase textile industry • Both export cotton • Pakistan also exports wool carpets and leather goods • Microcredit – Small loans become available to poor entrepreneurs • How might this help improve life in poor countries? What are the risks?

Religious/Ethnic Differences • Most people who live in Pakistan and Bangladesh follow what religion? • Even though both countries have a large population of the same religion, what might be some differences? • More strict? Less Strict? • Purdah • Ethnic Differences • In Pakistan, 5 main ethnic groups exist and generally speak different languages. • In Bangladesh, the population is less diverse and most speak Bengalis.

Modern Life/Culture • Modern Life • Large Families • Arranged Marriages are common • Poetry • Oral Literature is very popular in both Bangladesh and Pakistan • Mushairas – Poetry Readings draw thousands of people • Music and Dance • Qawwali – Devotional Singing • Folk Dances (Mainly in Bangladesh)
