  4. Profile of a research scientist • Passion • Love research, exploration of unknown • Dedicated and perseverant • Enthusiasm • Ready to make sacrifice in life • But also know when to draw the line • Don’t get burned out!

  5. Profile of a research scientist • Luck • It helps if you make a breakthrough early in your career • It could happen any time In a war between researchers and the others

  6. Choice of the mentor • Choose a mentor with a good reputation • You may be judged by your affiliations • But don’t remain in the shadow of your mentor • Maintain good relationship with your mentor • A good mentor will recognize your talents • A good mentor will let you take initiatives • A good mentor will nurture you

  7. Build up a CV • Start early • Collect prizes, awards • Publish first author papers • Publish in good journals • Attend conferences • Apply for travel funds • Write grants A share enterprise to build knowledge

  8. Make yourself known • Don’t be shy but pro-active • Present your work at meetings • Oral presentations are important • But they have to be transform into publication • Interact, ask questions • Be first author on papers

This is where your research career takes off, make strategic choices Start to think about your postdoc early Leave the institution where you did your PhD/EdD Find other opportunities Get a postdoctoral fellowship, it will give you freedom and independence and will set you on a path Think about your Postdoc An opportunity for grow

  10. Think about your Postdoc • Be aware of fellowship application deadlines (usually July) • NIH postdoctoral fellowships • NINR postdoctoral fellowships • Others postdoctoral fellowship
