The IB Diploma Program Curriculum Model • Standard Level vs. Higher Level: • Standard Level (SL) – course of study that is covered over a period of one school year • Higher Level (HL) – course of study that is covered over a period of two school years • Exams occur at the completion of the course of study

The IB Diploma Program Curriculum Model • The IB Diploma Academic Areas: • Group 1 – Language A – study in the students’ first language (USA – English) • Group 2 – Language B – study in a world language • Group 3 – Individuals & Societies – study in the social sciences • Group 4 – Experimental Sciences • Group 5 – Mathematics • Group 6 – Arts & Electives – study in the fine arts or a second subject from courses offered in Groups 3 & 4.

The IB Diploma Program Curriculum Model • IB Diploma Core: • Extended Essay – 4,000-word independent, research-based paper • Creativity, Action & Service (CAS) –involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the Diploma Program. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Action seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service with the community offers a vehicle for a new learning with academic value. The three strands of CAS enhance students’ personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and enable journeys of self-discovery. • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – non-tested course in which students will investigate how they know what they know and develop habits of reflection which they bring to each subject, resulting in a deeper intellectual experience.

  7. WHS Pre-IB Application Process • Must Meet Two Criteria: • Have a 3.00 GPA in Core Academic Courses at the 8th grade level • Have completed Algebra I by the end of 8th grade • Complete & submit application & a copy of 1st semester report by February 12

Pre-IB Ninth Grade Schedule Options: • Option 1: • Summer School - One Core Academic Course (Biology H, World History H or Geometry –tuition based, taken summer prior to, or after 9th grade) • Grade 9: • Four Core Academic Courses (Two of the following: Biology H, World History H, or Math and English 1H and World Language) • PE • Elective • Core Academic Courses –No additional Core Academic Course may be taken during the 9th Grade Year!

Requirements of the IB Program for obtaining the IB Diploma: • Over the course of two years students will complete: • Six Exams – subject to registration & exam costs • Extended Essay that requires a staff advisor • CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) mandatory component that requires a staff advisor

  11. International Baccalaureate Career-related Certificate (IBCC) Walnut High School is now an authorized school for the IB Career-related Certificate. The IBCC consists of an IB course requirement, IBCC Core component and a career-related component. The IBCC at WHS focuseson Biomedical Sciences as its career Component

IB Course Requirement & Core Component • Two Diploma Courses – 11th & 12th Grade : • English HL • Math Studies SL or Math SL • World Language SL – Spanish, French, German or Chinese • Science SL – Biology SL or Chemistry SL • IBCC Core component – 11th & 12th Grade: • Community & Service Program • Approaches to Learning course (no Exam) • Language Development (Modern Language course) • Reflective Project

Project Lead the Way Career Component : Biomedical Sciences – Four Courses • Principles of the Biomedical Sciences (PBS) – 10th Grade • Study of human body systems and health conditions • Human Body Systems (HBS) – 11th Grade • Exploring science in action, students build organs and tissues on a skeletal manikin and play the role of biomedical professionals to solve medical mysteries

Project Lead the Way Career Component : Biomedical Sciences – Four Courses • Medical Interventions (MI) – 12th Grade • Investigation of interventions involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease • Biomedical Innovation (BI)– 12th Grade • Students design innovative solutions for the health challenges of the 21st century
