Past technologies: Are they of any use • Sir Isaac Newton is credited with the statement that we can see further because we stand on the shoulders of giants • What does this mean (inventions depend on work of others) • An example is IBM use of punch cards that were linked to the punch cards of weaving machines and pianolas in the 1800s • By looking and using past technologies inventors are able to avoid repetition and previous mistakes

The concept of a computer • Technical calculators were first developed for use in war particularly artillery • An early computer was developed to crack the German enigma code in World War II • An important milestone was the USA census in 1880 where a counting machine was developed. This led to the start of IBM Corp a major player in computers in the mid 20th century Enigma Decoder Hollerith Census Machine

  4. Class Task • New task CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) computer displays are no longer popular • Research as to reasons why they are unpopular • List and describe 5 reasons as to why they are unpopular • In what way has a computer mouse changed over the last 20 years
