  1. How to prepare in real-time Design protocol, incl. technical data package & validation report

  2. What is the design protocol • The design protocol is the protocol of how, why and what you have designed. It comprises any number of entries that you create in the course of your design, including: • The Technical Data Package comprising clear references to all those entries describing your final design, including a) sketches, b) CAD drawings, c) material definitions, adequately defined and dimensioned to allow unambiguous reproduction of your design by a manufacturing facility - including tolerances where applicable • The Validation Report comprising clear references to all those calculations/ simulation descriptions and their results that validate the suitability of your design

  3. How to keep the design protocol • The design protocol is kept exclusively with the smartpen notebook • Document (sketch, write) as you go • Every item, internal or external, that is referenced should be given a reference number (marked in a circle when handwritten), therefore (1), (2), (3), and so on. • Internal items are everything (an idea, a sketch, a proposition, a calculation etc) that you write in the notebook- add by hand a reference number next to each at the time you first need to reference it • External items, such as screen-captures of search results, CAD models or numerical analysis results (i.e. in FEA or Excel) must be referenced in the notebook whenever they are used. Capture them through OneNote and type a reference number next to them.

  4. Sample protocol layout references any number of non-contradicting items, internal or external, that collectively and unambiguously describe the final design NO NEW IDEAS CREATED HERE contains all internal items (sketches, calculations, etc), referenced or not, that emerged during the design process contains all referenced external items (CAD drawings, FEA/ Excel calculations, internet search results etc), that emerged during the design process references any number of non-contradicting items, internal or external, that collectively validate the final design NO NEW IDEAS CREATED HERE

  5. Important information! • When in doubt, ask one of your instructors.
