Why fractured reservoir ? • More than 40% of the world reservoirs are carbonate! • 85% of the carbonate reservoirs are fractured!

Problem • ∆x, ∆y, and ∆y are predicted from the average reservoir permeability (k) obtained from well test curve. BUT Does this assumption satisfy the reality? Is there a unique pressure responsefor the entire reservoir or it depends on some other factors? Δz Δy Δx
Unique response? Well location Fracture distribution
Well Location First set Second set Third set
Fractures exponential distribution • Fractures quantity = β e – β x • X = distance between 2 fracture in one set • Fractures density and permeability are constant β β = 0.15 Homogeneous model β = 0.1 150 m 150 m

Objectives • Give to Reservoir Geologists : • The capability to deeply integrate dynamics data, • The possibility to invalidate geological scenarios with dynamic behaviour, • The possibility to run well tests and compare to actual data, • A friendly-user soft within the geomodelling tool,
Flowers • It will be : • Dedicated to Reservoir Geologists, • A single-phase or dual-phase flow simulator useable by non specialists, • Based on simplified physics, • Developed in partnership with Colenco, • A soft that can be plugged in any geomodelling soft (Petrel, gOcad, others). • It will not be : • a concurrent for complex flow simulators, • a tool for matching a long and complex production history.
Main principles • Flowers is developed with free use of algorithms from GeoScale project (Sintef – Oslo) • GeoScale, a multi-scale simulation : • mixed multi-scale finite element methods, • subscale information incorporated through base functions computed numerically on local sub-grid, • global system solved on coarse grid, • natural scalability and parallelism, • very flexible with respect to geometry of grid-blocks. Upscaled permeability Multiscale solution
X-component of velocity base functions in 2D Two scales • Multi-scale methodology using a fine and a coarse grid : • Base functions at coarse scale integrate fine scale information, in order to • capture heterogeneity
3D model One water injection well and one oil producer K field Velocity field Saturation
CPU Time Nb Cells Advantages of the Multi-Scale 1 coarse model : 10^3 cells + 1000 sub-models : 10^3 cells 1 model : 10^6 cells 100 x 100 x 100 cells 10 x 10 x 10 cells
2006 : main actions • Mid-December : • Delivering of a Flowers alpha version, • First tests performed. • Feb-May 2007 : • Optimisation for time performance (mostly saturation), • Comparison with Eclipse on Total synthetic case, • Simplified user interface.
To Do : Management of complex grids • Dead cells, and cells with nil volume or surface, • Faulted models
2007 : work program • Complete Test Phase: Organisation of test planning between June and August 2007. • Development of an industrial prototype : • Easy and convivial workflow for pre and post processing, for geologists, • Workflow for well tests (automatic sub - gridding, …) • Management of LGR, • Tracer displacement. • Test of algorithms.

Historical of Tests and Results (1/2) • 1-15 March, 2007 : A first model FELIX_1 is furnished to Colenco. When compared to Eclipse results, a strong difference in terms of pressure and saturation is detected. The model is too complicated for a first test. A “sugar box” must be provided. • 15-31 March, 2007 : A second model FELIX_2 is furnished to Colenco. When compared to Eclipse, a light difference in terms of pressure and saturation is detected. In addition, the entered capillary pressures highly complicates the calculus. A new model must be provided with no capillary pressure. From now on, each *.PRT, *.RSM and *.UNRST files from Eclipse simulation are furnished to Colenco.
Historical of Tests and Results (2/2) • 1-15 April, 2007 : A third model FELIX_3 is furnished to Colenco. Some of the furnished dynamical parameters are not coherent (FVF). The initialisation of pressure is not mastered. The setting of the Well Productivity Index is not coherent. From now on, each Productivity Index is furnished at the end of Eclipse simulation. • April-Mai, 2007 : A fourth model FELIX_4 is furnished to Colenco. The aim of the operation is to obtain a good matching with Eclipse results. A first Flowers V.0 version is to be furnished on June 4th. Once this operation realised, a well test will be conducted on a fifth model, interpreted with PIE and compared to a well test performed with Flowers.
First Observations • Time of calculus highly enhanced compared to prototyped versions (> x100) • Possibility to run simulations for large grids (over 10^5 cells) in a relatively short time. • Code not yet optimised for small models (1’000-100’000 blocks) mainly because the Multi-Scale process is not adapted.
Future Work on FlowersV.1 COLENCO TOTAL - AJILON • Delivery of the product (Flowers V.1) on June 4th. • Test of the software with Helene Baudson : Definition of the parameters to test (Velocity Field, Saturation Field, Pressure Field, …) and comparison with Eclipse. • Management of the capillary pressures. • A well test (single-phase) will be conducted on a model, interpreted with PIE and the pressure derivative will be compared to the one obtained with a well test performed with Flowers. • Operation in Zurich (June 20-22 2007) to test an “enhanced” Flowers V.1
