There Is No Community Without Mission • Session one established that deep community is a Biblical norm • But, community without mission is a lame experience • Ministerial Groups – formal and posturing • Fellowship Groups – shallow and role playing • Retreats – emotional and temporary • Most Communities Either: • Are Created And Maintained By A Mission • Discover And Maintain A Mission • Die

Jesus Was A Missional Leader • Jesus Knew His Life Had Missional Purpose • Jesus Refused To Let His Relationships Compromise His Mission-Mark 8:27-38 John 6:38 (NIV) 38 For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. John 10:10 (NIV) 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 12:46 (NIV) 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

  4. Foundational To attain missional community on your board… You must establish the mission as your foundation… And identify the specific mission of the board.

What Is the Mission Of The Board? • Pursue The Mission Wisely (Strategically) • Ensure Accountability And Good Stewardship • Build And Protect A Good Reputation • Annually Define The Board’s Contribution To The Mission • Mobilize Resources Based On Missional Goals • Volunteer Individually • Work On Projects In Collaboration With The ED and Staff • Work On Projects On Behalf Of The ED and Staff Here is a thought… Do you view “governance” and related activities as an end, or a means to an end?

A Missional Board… • Qualifies Incoming Board Members • Invests In Strategic Planning To Clarify Missional Direction • Annually Plans To “Operationalize” The Strategic Plan • Budget • Staff Goals • Board Goals • Creates Accountability To The Plan • What Measurements Should You Want From The Staff • What Measurements Should You Want From Each Other The Highest Functioning Board Is A Missional Community!
