  2. First, What is geography • Geo – Greek for Earth • Graphy – Greek for writing about • Therefore . . . • Geography is the study of and writing about the Earth.

  3. Physical geography • Geography is divided into 2 main parts: Physical and Human Geography • Physical Geography is the natural science which deals with the study of processes and patterns in the natural environment like atmosphere, biosphere and geosphere

  4. Physical systems of the environment • Physical Geography includes the study of life on earth (biosphere), water (hydrosphere), the atmosphere, even the weather (meteorology/ climatology), and simply the shape of the Earth (geomorphology)

Fields of Study • Human Geography studies the following areas: • Population Geography – demographics, pop. distribution • Cultural Geography – religion, languages, ethnicity, food • Political Geography – styles of government & their distribution • Economic Geography – economic development around world • Agricultural Geography – food production, land use • Urban Geography – organization of cities, urbanization
