Any definition of the term “social entrepreneurship” must start with the word “entrepreneurship.” The word “social” simply modifies entrepreneurship. If entrepreneurship doesn’t have a clear meaning, then modifying it with social won’t accomplish much, either.

  1. Any definition of the term “social entrepreneurship” must start with the word “entrepreneurship.” The word “social” simply modifies entrepreneurship. If entrepreneurship doesn’t have a clear meaning, then modifying it with social won’t accomplish much, either.

  2. Social responsibility: Recycling requires people and organizations to take responsibility for their environment. At Bryson Recycling we actively encourage communities to get recycling, be it at home, at work or at school. We are also creating sustainable and worthwhile jobs.

  3. Environmental sustainability: Recycling and reuse cuts down on the need to mine raw materials, reduces energy use and cuts down on the amount of landfill space required. We believe that recycling should be accessible and convenient. Through Kerbie boxes, our doorstep collection service, people are able to recycle a variety of different materials which otherwise would be disposed of at landfill sites.

  4. Economic viability: Bryson Recycling is a social enterprise. As such we plan and manage financial growth, not only to meet the running and operational costs of services but also to develop the business. Although we need to generate a surplus to secure our future against unforeseen contingencies and reinvest in our development, maximizing profit is not an aim. Another economic benefit is that far more jobs are created by the production of new materials using the recycling collected, than if the refuse was disposed of at landfill sites. Moreover we are working with local councils to find the most cost efficient and resourceful ways to recycle materials, alleviating the risk of fines from the European Parliament and UK Government.

  7. First, just because you have a social mission, don't assume it's less important to make money. In business -- as well as in the nonprofit sector -- sustainability means generating enough revenue to sustain the enterprise. • Second, just because you have money, don't assume it's a good idea to spend it.
