  2. First few centuries = Dark Age • Roman Empire had fallen • Fighting among people in Europe • Feudalism grew: (Manorial System) • People needed protection • Local Lords “nobility” hired knights to protect people • Serfs: farmers/peasants, not slaves had few rights

The Feudal System KING-ruled over all-provided land for baronsBISHOPS-ruled  the church-extremely wealthy fromcollected taxesBARONS-wealthy noblemen-had to provide the kingwith  knights in time of needLORDS-owned land, which theyrented to peasant workers-trained knights for baronsPEASANTS-worked on farms providedby lords-provided  food for everyone
