Activity 1: Waste-related legislation • Research one of the following pieces of waste-related legislation: • Restriction of Hazardous Substances (2006) • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (2002) • Packaging Regulations (1997) • What are the aims of the legislation? • What businesses does it affect? • How effective at achieving its aims do you think this legislation is?

  3. Activity 2: Recycling audit • Carry out a simple audit of recycling facilities on your University campus, addressing the following questions: • What materials can be recycled? • Where are the recycling bins located? • Is there evidence of misuse of recycling facilities? • Is there evidence of recyclable materials in waste bins? • How could recycling facilities be improved on campus?

  4. Activity 3: Industrial symbiosis • Access the National Industrial Symbiosis Program website (www.nisp.org.uk) and address the following questions: • What is meant by ‘industrial symbiosis’? • What are the overall achievements of the NIS program over the past four years? • Summarise one of the NISP case studies addressing the problem, the solution and the benefits achieved through the NIS program
