  2. Background HistoryBridging Units – Early idea conceived in 2008/2009 and looked to provide bite – sized learning for SME’s , College’s, Professional bodies, known as “bridging units”.

  3. Bridging Units – Initially creating real interest (in industry) but for required more in-depth detail. Intelligence gathering took place > LLN events > Professional body events > Industrial liaison events The idea of “bridging units”. Continued to expand and was taken to the market. … but 4 key issues raised…..

  4. What are bridging units? • What is the difference between attending University in the traditional way? • How long does it take? • What does it cost? • Can I try a “taster unit before progressing on to the full course?

  5. Why is this different? • This provides access to a 24/7 learning environment. • You are supported throughout the process from registration through to completion. • Provides engagement to fellow learners through Group blog, individual blog, all supported by your dedicated and specialist on-line tutor. • You study at times and places to suit the organisation but progress as a cohort via interactive media • Typically in 10 weeks you will cover 50 hours of learning, but this can be varied to suit the organisation and individual learner availability but equates to the equivalent of 5 higher educational credits.

  6. Provides a bridge to higher education • All Units fit within the modular degree structure and can be accumulated to attain awards • Because the Units are within the modularised degree structure students can transfer between modes of study • In time they can diversify into a mix of study for work and study for leisure • They are run throughout the year so the learner can have a step-on step-off experience • They can and will be constantly adapted and modified for new market sectors or differing organisations, reflecting both educational requirements and organisational culture / values.

  7. Typically Unit – Technical Portfolio (4CN005) Unit 1 Introduction to Quality Unit 2 Professional Ethics Unit 3 Introduction to Contract documentation Unit 4 Work based learning So a suite of bridging units may include – specific skills relating to the step up into higher education

  10. Charges The cost of each 5 credit unit is currently under review with a decision to be announced shortly. On completion of each unit (pass/fail) based on activities set throughout the week’s , you will receive a certificate. On completion of the 4th unit in the suite, you will be required to undertake a written assignment, but will be issued with a certificate from the University and be awarded a grade, and 20 credits of HE.
