History of Mobile Phones • Analog Cellular Networks – 1G (1985) • Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) • Used Frequency-division Multiple Access (FDMA) • Unencrypted, Vulnerable to Eavesdropping via Scanners and Susceptible to Cell Phone “Cloning”. • Talk Time of 30 minutes / 10 hours to charge.

Today’s Mobile Phones • Native IP Networks – 4G (2010s) • WiMAX (offered in US by Sprint) • LTE (Long Term Evolution) • Will eliminate Circuit Switching and Employ an All-IP Network (Voice calls treated as Data / VoLTE) • Downlink speeds (Bell LTE network currently provides speeds of 75Mbps – 150Mbps) • Mobile TV
