  10. Two problems • Find point location information from descriptive strings • Find polygons for disaster areas: admin boundaries or footprints Objective

  11. Find location information from descriptive strings Existing Structure

  12. First, parse out locations but maintain the unique disaster identifier Structure

  13. Locations with unique disaster ID Structure

  14. Gazeteer Services • Input string into Gazetter (Directories) service and return the Lat/Long (as a starting point). • Possible services • Google Earth (easiest parsing mechanism) • Bing Maps (used to be Microsoft Virtual Earth, runs on old ESRI World Gaz. Service) • Taggeo.com • Geonames.org • Maplandia • http://alexandria.ucsb.edu/gazetteer/ • http://www.columbiagazetteer.org Methods

  15. Batch Services • There is a batch service for address geocoding in Google Earth for some countries • I have not seen a batch service for a gazeteer lookup or fly to search – may need to write a custom application (or do manually) Methods

  16. Bing GZ Service Methods

  17. Bing GZ Service Methods

  18. Result, post-geocoding • After geocoding you will have a cluster of points per event, you can • export to use in an image archive search engine (footprinting) • create a minimum bounding polygon or • select within themes to highlight admin boundaries. Methods
