  3. Generalinformation • The European Unionis an economic and political union of 27 member states • Important institutions of the EU include the European Commission, the Council of the European Union, the European Council, the Court of Justice of the European Union, and the European Central Bank

  4. History of the European Union Treaty of Brussels • 1948 • Belgium,France,Germany,Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands • Protection against the war threat • Cooperation between Western Nations • Treaty was extended by the Protocol signed in Paris 1954

TreatyofParis • April 1951 • About creation of European Coal and Steel Community = Montan Union • States: France,West Germany, Italy and Benelux • Between these states the ECSC would create a common market for coal and steel • The ESCS was first proposed by French foreign minister Robert Schuman on 9 May 1950 as a way to prevent further war between France and Germany

ThetreatyofRome • 25th March 1957 • 2 treaties - EEC (European Economic Community) • - Euroatom (European Atomic Energy Community) • Rome • The signatories were Christian Pineau on behalf of France and Joseph Luns from the Netherlands, Paul Henri Spaak from Belgium, Joseph Bech from Luxembourg, Antonio Segni from Italy, Konrad Adenauer from the Federal Republic of Germany Euroatom -Tried to create the conditions for developing a strong nuclear industry EEC - They lay the foundations of a closer union among the people of Europe

Schengenagreement • Signed in 1985 near the town of Schengen in Luxembourg • It created bordless Schengen Area which is like single state with no internal borders controls but with amplified and fortified outer borders • It currently consists of 25 European countries and covers population over 400 milion people
