  2. Joints • A joints structure determines how it functions. • The closer the bones fit the stronger the joint. • Tightly fitting joints restrict movement. • The looser the fit the greater the movement, although the joint is weaker.

  3. Types of joints. • Ball and socket (hip, shoulder) • Pivot (Atlas an axus) • Hinge (elbow, fingers) • Gliding (ankle, wrist) • Saddle (thumb, ankle) • Ellipsiod / Condyloid (knee)

  4. Able to move in all direction. Also known as a multi-axial joint. Ball and socket Joint

  5. Has only one axis and allows rotational movement only. Pivot joint

  6. Has only one axis and allows flexion and extension only. Hinge Joint

  7. Exists where bones with flat surfaces meet. It allows sideways, foreword and backward movement. Gliding joint

  8. Is a bi-axial joint. Moves sideways and back and forth. Saddle joint

  9. Often classified as a hinge joint. Allows a small amount of rotation. Ellipsoid or Condyloid Joint

  10. Synovial Joints Most common joint involved in sporting endeavours.

Synovial Joints • Joints are lubricated by "synovial" fluid. • Connections called "synovial" joints are sturdy enough to hold the skeleton together and at the same time permit a range of motions. • The ends of these joints are coated with cartilages which reduce friction and cushion against jolts.
