  2. BACKGROUND Customs has been focusing on NAFTA compliance. Not being compliant can result in stiff penalties, leading into audits and losing NAFTA privileges. The objective of this presentation is very simple. How to prepare the NAFTA Certificate of Origin

  3. Objectives • Provide you with a sample request for NAFTA Certificate under Customs Form 28 by Import Specialist. • How to read the CF28 and respond. • What is the NAFTA Certificate • How to complete it.

  4. Customs Requests Certificate • Customs will send out via mail and copy Customs Broker a CF28 • Customs will specify in the form what is requested. • Customs will specify how long importer has to respond. • Review Sample CF28

  5. CF28-Request for Information; • A copy will always be given to Customs Broker. • An original will be mailed to importer of record. Address is that provided to Customs via entry summary. This is what is provided to Broker/Filer of entry via Power of Attorney. • The CF28 will have all Relevant information about the entry that covers the product which Customs wants to verify its NAFTA qualification. • The document will specify, Customs Form 434 (Nafta Certificate) • Unless otherwise stipulated, Customs provides 30 days to respond to the request. • The form will be signed by petitioner which is normally a Customs Import Specialist and will provide contact information including their phone number.
