  2. The NTSB is Responsible for Investigating: • All U.S. civil aviation accidents and certain public use accidents

  3. Highway accidents (including certain grade-crossing accidents) which involve issues ofwide-ranging safety significance.

  4. Major marine accidents and collisions between a public and a non-public vessel or accidents involving Coast Guard functions.

  5. Railroad accidents in which there is a fatality, substantial property damage, or which involve a passenger train.

  6. Pipeline accidents in which there is a fatality, significant environmental or property damage.

  7. Transportation accidents involving the release of hazardous materials, including fatal accidents or those causing major disruptions to a community.

  8. Other NTSB Responsibilities: • Maintains official civil aviation accident database. • Acts as the appeals court for airmen, air carriersand mariners. • Provides family assistance following accidents.
