Who is a Mandatory Reporter? • Medical practitioners • Nurses • Dentists • Social service counselors/therapists • Psychologists • Medical examiners • Pharmacists • Child care providers • Law enforcement officers • Juvenile probation officers • Corrections employees • DSHS employees • Placement and liaison specialists • Responsible living skills program staff • HOPE center staff • State family and children's ombudsman • Any volunteer in the ombudsman's office • Adults residing with child suspected to have been severely abused • School personnel

Mandatory Reporting Laws • Mandated Reporters must report suspected child abuse or neglect (or cause a report to be made) to law enforcement or CPS when they believe a child has suffered abuse or neglect or may be at risk of abuse or neglect. RCW 26.44.030 (1)(a) • The report must be made at the first opportunity, but after there is belief that the child has suffered abuse or neglect. RCW 26.44.030 (1)(f) • A child is defined as any person under the age of eighteen years.

  4. Who must report child abuse & neglect? • Any person who, in his or her official supervisory capacity with a nonprofit or for-profit organization, has reason to believe that a child has suffered abuse or neglect by a person responsible for the child’s care.

  5. Why Report? Why should I report? • So that children can be protected from further harm. What if I do not report? • Every person who is required to make, or cause a report to be made and knowingly fails to do so, shall be guilty of a gross misdemeanor.

  6. Questions that will be askedwhen you call: • The name, address and age of the child. • The name and address of the child's parent, guardian or other persons having custody of the child. • The nature and extent of the abuse or neglect. • Any evidence of previous incidences. • Any other information which may be helpful in establishing the cause of the child's abuse or neglect and the identity of the perpetrator.http://www.dshs.wa.gov/ca/safety/abuseReq.asp?2

  7. CPS Reporting Form • Complete top portion prior to calling CPS. • Call CPS, 1-800-422-7517 • Describe abuse/neglect as objectively as possible. • Ask for name of intake worker. • Make a copy for yourself and counselor. • COUNSELORS are available to HELP!
