  1. REU-Site: Superconductivity in FeSe Systems under Pressure Yogesh K. Vohra, University of Alabama at Birmingham, DMR 1058974 Intellectual Merit: This research investigates the possibility of novel superconducting phases in iron-based materials under high pressures and low temperatures. The goal is to develop new superconducting materials for a sustainable energy future. High pressure electrical transport measurements showing a superconducting state is combined with the structural data obtained at the Advanced Photon Source in Chicago. REU Nathaniel Wolanyk research showed that FeSe0.8 material had the highest superconductivity transition temperature of 40 K at 11 GPa (a new record for FeSe materials). Figure 1: The superconducting transition temperature (Tc ) as a function for pressure for the two compositions of FeSe compounds (FeSe1.01 and FeSe0.8 ). The Tc initially increases with pressure showing a maximum and then a subsequent decrease due to a structural transformation under pressure.

  2. REU-Site: Superconductivity in FeSe Systems under Pressure Yogesh Vohra, University of Alabama at Birmingham, DMR 1058974 Broader Impacts: The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) in collaboration with the University of West Georgia, Alabama Sate University and the University of Montevallo in Alabama offer interdisciplinary materials research experiences to teachers and undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds in physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, and engineering. As a result of this REU experience, Nathaniel Wolanyk has decided to pursue a PhD in physics. Nathaniel Wolanyk is an undergraduate physics and computer science major from the Illinois Wesleyan University and is studying superconducting behavior in FeSe materials under high pressure.
