  1. What is the treatment for lymphoedema?

  2. What is lymphoedema Lymphoedema is a condition whose recommended treatment is decongestive lymphatic therapy (DLT). While this treatment option doesn’t provide a cure for the condition, it will help to reduce the symptoms. While this requires time and effort, this treatment option is an effective way of controlling lymphoedema.

  3. Components Used in Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy • Compression bandages & garments. This helps to remove the fluid from an affected area • Skin care. Helps to ensure that your skin remains in good condition and minimises the chances of infection • Exercises. The goal of exercises is to use the muscles in affected limb and thus improve the lymph drainage • Specialized massage technique. This helps to stimulate the fluid flow in lymphatic system and thus help to minimise the swelling

  4. Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy DLT will usually begin with a therapy phase that is quite effective. This may involve getting treatment for several weeks in order to minimize the inflammation in the affected part of the body. This is followed by what is referred to as the maintenance phase. In this phase, you are to be in control of your care by engage in some self-massage technique, continuing with exercises and putting on the compression garment. The medical practitioner may reviews your progress after a few months to see whether there is progress.

  6. Compression Garments or Bandage The lymphatic system doesn’t have a central pump like the heart that can help in the movement of fluids. Instead, it uses a massaging effect in the surrounding muscles to help in movement of fluids. Special garments or bandages such as gloves, tights, stockings or sleeves are used to treat patients suffering from lymphoedema. The goal of these damages is to support the muscle affected when exercising and ensure that they are able to move the fluids out of the limb that is affected.
