  2. Enlightenment • Many Enlightenment thinkers came to Amsterdam. • The Republic was the first place to print journals and articles. • There were 2 different groups of Enlightenment thinkers in the Netherlands:

  3. 2 groups in the Netherlands • Hugenot immigrants + people from Spanish Netherlands. • Wrote in French • Never talked about life in the Republic. • Talked about religion • Dutch people. • Wrote in Dutch or Latin. • More concerned about changing Dutch Life and economy.

  4. Dutch Thinkers • Very important for science. • E.g. Herman Boerhaave: • Wrote a chemistry textbook for students all over Europe • Erasmus • Spinoza

  5. Eise Eisinga • Lived in Friesland • Interested in astronomy and taught himself about it. • 1774: preacher Eelco Alta wrote about the upcoming end of the world. • Planets would colide and the earth would be crushed. • Eise Eisinga wanted to prove him wrong. • He built his own planetarium on the ceiling of his home.

  6. Planetarium • It took him 7 years to built it. • Panic died down and less interest. • But the first planetarium built this way. • People from all over Europe came to look at it. • It’s still working!
