Washington, DC-VA-MD, Transportation Management Area • Pursuant to 23 United States Code (USC) 134(i) (5) and 49 USC 1607, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) must jointly certify the metropolitan transportation planning in Transportation Management Areas (TMA) at least once every three years. As written in the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU) of 2005, the Federal Certification process will now occur at least once every four years.

  8. Certification Statement • The FHWA and the FTA have determined that the transportation planning process of the Transportation Planning Board of the Washington DC-VA-MD TMA meets the requirements of the Metropolitan Planning Rule at 23 CFR Part 450 Subpart C and 49 CFR Part 613. The FHWA and the FTA are, therefore, jointly certifying the transportation planning process.
