  1. Welcome to Family Math Night Problem Solving in Grade 3&4

  2. PROBLEM SOLVING • demonstrate that they are reflecting on and monitoring their thinking to help clarify their understanding as they complete an investigation or solve a problem (e.g., by explaining to others why they think their solution is correct) • create basic representations of simple mathematical ideas (e.g., using concrete materials; physical actions, such as hopping or clapping; pictures; numbers; diagrams; invented symbols), make connections among them, and apply them to solve problems • communicate mathematical thinking orally, visually, and in writing, using everyday language, a developing mathematical vocabulary, and a variety of representations.

  3. Problem 1 Grade 4

  4. Level 3 Answer

  5. What makes a complete solution? • A complete solution process (e.g., shows & explains steps, meets the conditions of the problem) • Appropriate conclusions with supporting evidence (explain, prove, justify) • Demonstrates considerable understanding of concepts (e.g. uses operations appropriately, chooses a suitable strategy)

  6. Level 2 Answer

  7. Problem 2 Rafid has a group of 10 coins with a total value of $5. There are three different kinds of coins in his group. What could be the coins in Rafid’s group? Explain your answer. Mathematics Grade 3, Spring 2007

  8. What’s missing?

  9. Level 3 Answer

  10. Practise Working With Money • Use the fewest coins • Find as different ways to solve the problem (when appropriate) • Let them save their own money (like Stephen) • Let them pay or make change

  11. Supporting Your Child At Home • Make it easy (use up to $1 or up to $100) • Always justify, prove, check and ask “How do you know you’re right?” • Teach them strategies for working with numbers • Let them solve problems in a way that works for them (e.g., use pictures, use real coins) • Let them do as much as they can independently

  12. Thank you for coming • Remember that work at home should be easy practice • Visit schools.tdsb.on.ca/Kingslake/ for slides from tonight’s sessions and links to EQAO sample problems • Any questions?
