JonBenet Ramsey • Boulder Colorado: At 5:00am on December 26th 1996, Patsy Ramsey found a two and a half page ransom note on the staircase of her house • The note indicated that their Daughter JonBenet, six years old, was being held ransom for $118,000 • At 5:25am Patsy called 911, and the police arrived 7 minutes later

JonBenet Ramsey • The Ramsey's attended a Christmas Party the previous evening. • On the way home, JonBenet had fallen asleep in the car, and was carried to her bed from the car around 11:00pm. • The Ramsey's went to bed soon after; they were leaving early the next morning for a holiday trip to lake Michigan

JonBenet Ramsey • Initially the police treated the case as a kidnapping • Friends and family came to the house to support the Ramsey's. • No ransom call was ever placed to the Ramsey’s, contrary to what the ransom note suggested. • Several hours after JonBenet was thought to be missing; her father and a family friend found her body in a wine cellar in their basement.

JonBenet Ramsey • The autopsy revealed among other things that there were no drugs in her system and that there was undigested pineapple in the stomach of the young girl. • There were signs of previous sexual assault (not the night of her death). • At the crime scene there was no signs of forced entry, but there was a broken window in the basement, that would not close properly, there was a suitcase below the window.

JonBenet Ramsey • Immediately the parents of JonBenet became suspects • The dollar amount in the ransom note was the exact amount that John Ramsey was to receive for a bonus • On December 28th 1996 John and Patsy Ramsey go to the Boulder police department to give, blood, hair and handwriting samples.

JonBenet Ramsey • Despite the fact that the samples the Ramsey's provided were not consistent with any of the crime scene samples, in public opinion they were considered guilty • The case goes cold for over ten years, the parents maintain their innocence the entire time • In June of 2006 Patsy Ramsey died from ovarian cancer

JonBenet Ramsey • August 16th 2006, 41-year-old John Karr was arrested in Bangkok Thailand for the murder of JonBenet Ramsey • John Karr, an American citizen and a teacher for a short time, was in Thailand on a work visa, teaching. • After his arrest, John Karr admitted to reporters that he was involved with JonBenet Ramsey’s case

JonBenet Ramsey • He claimed that she died accidentally • He said that he had drugged, assaulted and accidentally killed JonBenet after picking her up from school that day. • Karr was familiar with some evidence in the case that was not disclosed to the public. • Karr’s ex-wife claims that he was with her in Alabama during the time of the murder. • Karr had been arrested in the past for possession of child pornography.
