  2. ANTIOCH MIDDLE SCHOOL DEMOGRAPHICS • North Kansas City School District (18,500 K-12 Students) • Antioch Middle School Grades 6-8 • 930 Students • 40% Free and Reduced Lunch Students • 64 Certified Teachers • 3 Administrators (1 Principal, 2 Assistant Principals)

  3. “To get through the hardest journey we need to take only one step at a time, but we must keep on stepping.” ~CHINESE PROVERB

  4. OUR JOURNEY WITH PBIS • All components of PBIS Tier 1 are in place at Antioch • We started this journey together three years ago • Formed PBIS Committee and participated in professional development for one full year • Developed matrix • During year two, we implemented two components of PBIS • School-Wide Reinforcement Program and Lesson Planning on a small scale • Created new Office Discipline Referral Form • During year three (2010-11), we were at full implementation of Tier 1 PBIS • Implemented new Office Discipline Referral Form

  5. SO WHAT ARE THE NUMBERS?

  6. SO WHERE ARE WE NOW? • We are beginning Tier 2 Interventions at Antioch Middle School • During the 2nd semester we will start Check-In Check-Out (CICO) with a very small number of students (6) • As with every step along this journey, we have taken very small ‘baby steps’ in order to implement with FIDELITY

  7. Tier 2 Interventions For students with… • Low level problems • Non-compliance, disrespect • Work completion • Attendance, tardy • ODR 2-5, classroom minor 4-6 range • Behavior occurs across multiple locations • Students with internalizing concerns, but not self-injurious

  8. Tier 2 Interventions alone are not for students with… • Serious or violent infractions • Extreme chronic behavior (6+) • Individualized support • Problems that require FBA-BIP/Wraparound Services

  9. Goals of Tier 2 • Have available a menu of interventions for responding to the diverse range of student needs • Provide interventions to support approximately 15% of the student population who are at risk, but not currently engaging in severe problem behavior (Walker & Horner, 1996; Crone, Hawken & Horner, 2010, p. 7)

  10. WE CHOSE CICO for TIER 2! WHAT IS CICO? • Check-in / Check-out is an intervention program for students who are starting to engage in frequent problem behavior. • The program will serve up to 6 students at a time as we are beginning the process. This will expand to serve as many as necessary during the 2012-13 school year. • The goal of the program is to respond early to students who are acting out and to provide them with more frequent feedback on their behavior to prevent future problem behavior.

  11. DAILY PROGRESS MONITORING

  12. SO…. How do we determine which students qualify for Tier 2?
