  2. The Department of Homeland Security was established on September 20th 2001 • DHS was established in record time • The primary mission was to protect the homeland • Tome Ridge was designated the first Director of Homeland Security • Chart: figure 2.8 on page 35 • Mission Statement on page 36

The Department of Homeland Security • The Homeland Security Act of 2002 established DHS • The Act compartmentalizes the agency into four main areas of responsibility • Border and transportation • Emergency preparedness and response • chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear countermeasures • information analysis and infrastructure protection

  4. The Primary Focus of DHS • Prevent terrorist acts within the United States • Reduce America's vulnerability to terrorism • Minimize the damage and then recover from attacks that do occur

DHS Offices • DHS Office of Policy- formulates and coordinates DHS policy • DHS Office of Health Affairs – deals with medically related incidents • DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis – assesses and analyzes information and data regarding threat • DHS Office of Operations Coordination – monitors and coordinates Homeland Security activities and programs in 50 states in conjunction with law enforcement partners
