  1. ECS 410 – Assessment and Evaluation February 5, 2014 Dr. Warren Wessel

  2. Norm-referenced Test • On a norm-referenced test, nationally, 50 percent of students are below average, by definition. (Bracey, 2006) • Compare person to all persons in the population. • Examples – SATs, GREs, • Where have your written NRTs and for what purpose?

  3. Criterion Referenced Tests • Compare performance to a set of standards in performance. • Examples – Medical certification exams, RN exams, Drivers exams and driving tests, Provincial reading assessments, Provincial math assessments • Standardized CRTs exist – they have cut off points for success. Minimum marks achievement level. • What about provincial exams and tests in schools? Are they CRTs or NRTs?

  4. Activity – What kind of assessment and evaluation did you have in High School and in University Classes? • You need to be able to recall life in the past to do this activity! In fact you need to think back to at least Grade 9 and then move forward to the end of HS and on to your experience in University. • Think about the kinds of assessment and evaluation you experienced in that time period. • Decide whether you generally experienced Criterion-referenced assessment, or Norm-referenced assessment.

  5. Reading for February 10 • Read – “redefining fair” posted on the Wiki • The article is divided into “Challenges” and “Fixes for the Challenges”. • On Monday be prepared to discuss the Challenges and Fixes from your viewpoint as pre-service teachers. You have quite a lot of experience in being assessed. Do the challenges and fixes speak to you and your experience? Do they help you think about assessment and evaluation and how you might do something differently in the future?
