  2. William Shakespeare • Born April 23, 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon. • Father, John was a glove maker and later elected mayor • Married Anne Hathaway in 1582 • Children – Susanna -1583 Hamnet & Judith 1585.

  3. William Shakespeare • Shakespeare left Stratford-upon-Avon soon after the birth of the twins. • In 1594 he was a member of a theatre troupe called The Lord Chamberlain’s Men as an actor and a playwright.

  4. Shakespeare’s Plays • Wrote 37 Plays • Tragedy ComedyHistory • Iambic Pentameter- 10 syllables-one unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. (like a heart beat). • Plays were produced for the general public (popular entertainment) • Plays were not published until after Shakespeare’s death.

  5. The Globe Theatre • Built in 1599 • Destroyed in a fire • Opened air • Flag signaled a performance • No artificial lighting – day light only • Octagonal Shape • Galleries – Higher priced seats • Pit – “Groundlings” Stood to watch the plays

  6. Globe Theatre • Little Scenery – Only a piece or two to represent a place. • Colorful costumes and many props. • Music and sound effects. • Stage platform extended into the pit. • Roof supported by two columns covered the stage. • Trap door in stage floor.
