  2. How will you write a cover letter? • Preliminary research • Proper heading • Opening paragraph • Middle paragraphs • Conclusion • Closing

Preliminary Research • Look up information about this college, job, etc… prior to writing your letter. • Address the letter to the proper person. • Look on the website or job posting for the interviewer, admissions representative, human resources representative, or other labeled contact person SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS: Your First name, Last name Your street address City, State, Zip code The date the letter is written Name of the contact person Title of the contact person Organization’s name Street address City, State, Zip code Dear (Ms., Mr., Dr., etc…):

Opening Paragraph • Skip one line after the greeting and begin writing. • DO NOT INDENT if you are writing in the block style (suggested) • Address the purpose of your letter • Get the attention of your audience quickly and appropriately • Introduce yourself briefly and discuss the purpose of the letter • Why are you interested? • Explain how YOU will help THEM (give them a glimpse / preview of yourself as a student or employee)

  5. Middle Paragraphs • Start every paragraph with a TOPIC SENTENCE • Use strong language • EX. Don’t write= I worked as a babysitter for my neighbor’s kids. • EX. DO WRITE= As a child caregiver for the Sullivan family, I maintained a safe, fun, and educational environment. • Highlight and SHOW specific skills that will benefit the company / program. • CHOOSE ONE SKILL PER PARAGRAPH (2-3 total) • Provide concrete evidence and specific examples of your qualifications for the desired position / opening. • Emphasize your interest in THIS company / program.

  6. Conclusion • What is the next step? Write that you look forward to an interview. • Be confident and hopeful but not arrogant. • Ex. I look forward to meeting you in person so we can further discuss my interest in your program. • Ex. Please contact me at your earliest convenience. I believe I have many skills that would benefit your company and look forward to discussing them with you in person. • Provide, again, your most reliable contact information. • Be available when they contact you. • Ex. If you are a student or hold a current job, provide a “best time” to call by phone.

  7. Closing • Do not get too fancy or friendly with your salutation. • An appropriate salutation looks like this: Sincerely, (PRESS ENTER 2 TIMES BECAUSE YOUR SIGNATURE GOES HERE) Jed I. Knight Enclosure: Resume ( Write this because your resume and cover letter are submitted together)
