  3. Fearful of Globalization? • U.S. dominance • U.S. can alter traditional values of other cultures with immoral behavior

  4. Economic Globalization • Positive • Expansion of production worldwide • Access to larger markets worldwide • Negative • Small businesses cannot compete on a global scale

  5. Free Trade • Supporters • Promote growth of democracy • Everyone has the potential to be better off, especially developing countries • Wider and cheaper selection of goods • Critics • Rich get richer, poor get poorer • American jobs are lost to foreign nations

  6. Health Concerns Worldwide • HIV/AIDS • Malaria • Malnutrition

  7. Environmental Concerns • Greenhouse effect • Climate change

  8. Wealthy vs. Developing Countries on the Environment • North (wealthy) use more resources, thus contribute to more pollution overall • South (developing) see population increases, which can lead to more pollution

  9. U.S. and the Environment • Still lag behind other parts of world • U.S. likes things BIG • Care more about economy and business • Like to focus on green technology (Hybrid cars, alternative energy, etc.)

  10. International Relations • U.S. loves the spread of democracy to make war nonexistent with the greater respect of its citizens • Also helps with trade

  11. International Organization • Seek to resolve problems that affect multiple countries • Examples: • United Nations (UN) • European Union (EU) • African Union (AU)

  12. UN Problems? • International vs. individual country • Could override the Constitution

  13. Culture and Values • Human Rights:certain fundamental rights that every human being should possess regardless of law or culture

  14. Some Nations are Worried about Universal Rights? • Americanization threaten cultures

  15. Universal Declaration of Rights • Appear • Life • Liberty • Innocence until proven guilty • Property • Religion • Slavery • Vote • Don’t Appear • Nationality • Movement • Marry/start family • Work in trade unions • Equal pay for equal work • Rest/pay for holidays • Adequate standard of living
