  1. Communication and media SPI List: 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8

  2. bellringer: review from yesterday Re-write the following “rambler” by correcting the run-on sentences and/or combining sentences. *Remember our lesson from yesterday. Last week was my mom’s birthday, and the whole family came over to celebrate, so my sister Leah made a chocolate-chip cheesecake, which is my mom’s favorite dessert, and it looked absolutely wonderful, yet as soon as we tasted it, it was clear that something had gone wrong, because it tasted awful, and Leah realized that she had forgotten to add the sugar!

  3. Directions for group activity • Group leaders assign roles. • Read the speech and report as a group, when the directions tell you to. • Agree on answers before writing them down. • For each answer, you must write an explanation about why the other three are wrong and your answer is right. If you can find evidence in the text, cite it. • As you read, make notes on your speech/report that may help you answer questions about it. Most questions that go with speeches and reports are the same: logical order, thesis/main points, summary, group role questions, fact/opinion questions, intended audience. If you know this ahead of time, you can look for it as you read.

  4. Identify the thesis and main points of a speech • First, ask yourself…What is the question asking me to do? As a group, rewrite the question. • What is the sentence that summarizes the overall point of the speech? Find it and underline it. • Hint: The main points of a speech are sometimes listed in the thesis and are the primary arguments that the speaker is making to support the thesis. • On your table, there is a folder. In that folder, there is a speech for you to read as a group. Read the speech first. Identify the thesis and main points of the speech. Write them on your paper. After you read the speech, read the report. You will also have questions that go with it. Answer the questions on the next slides as a group. The leader will check your answers.

  5. Thesis questions: speech 1. The main purpose of Rick’s speech is to F: explain how a four-day school week would work G: convince school officials to consider a four-day school week H: entertain his classmates with an interesting story about his previous school J: describe how to make classes longer to have time for extra activities 2. The purpose of the last paragraph in this speech is to F: share an experience G: suggest ideas H: present more activities J: provide a summary

  6. Thesis questions: report • The main purpose of this report is to F: describe parts of the body that form the nervous system G: provide information about the nervous system H: persuade readers to learn more about the nervous system J: explain how to care for the nervous system • Choose the best thesis statement for this report F: The nervous system is a topic that is covered in many publications. G: The nervous system is just one of the many systems in the human body. H: The nervous system controls voluntary and involuntary responses. J: The nervous system controls human thinking, body movement, and functions.

  7. Select the most appropriate behaviors for participating productively in a team/ identify functions and responsibilities of group roles • What is this question asking? Is there a test taking strategy that I can use on these types of questions that might make it easier for me? • As a group, answer the group role/group behavior questions on the next slide. Write your answers on your notebook paper. Please read each question out loud and answer as a team. All group members should agree before you write your answer down. • Again, remember to write an explanation about why your choice is correct.

  8. Group Role Questions 1.Which member of a group is most responsible for making sure every member’s opinion is written down for evaluation during a brainstorming task? A: the leader B: the timekeeper C: the recorder D: the information gatherer

  9. Group Role questions 2. Marisol’s history class is doing group projects. Marisol has been assigned as the group’s leader. When several of her group members begin arguing over the details of the project, Marisol must make a decision. What could Marisol do that would best keep her group on task and able to complete the assigned work? F: Marisol could remind the group members that they only have a short period of time in which to complete the assigned task, and then she could work independently if others do not begin helping. G: Marisol cold gather the group together to go over the task the group needs to complete, and then she could assign jobs to individuals in the group. H: Marisol could take notes about the different opinions being expressed by group members, and then she could choose the best idea and suggest that the group complete the task using it. J: Marisol could talk to her teacher about changing jobs within her group so she will not have to interfere in the discussion taking place.
