  1. Canto 19 Shelli Harvell November 2007

  2. In this Canto Dante an Virgil have entered the third rim of the 8th circle. In this rim those that have committed simony are punished. They are the ones that have taken sacred things of the church and sold them for their own gain. The sinners here are upside down in stones were the only thing that is exposed are their feet which are on fire. As Dante and Virgil explore the trench they see one shadow whose feet are flaming more than the others and they go over to speak with him. As Dante approaches the spirit he calls out to him asking if he is Boniface and why has he come so early. Dante tells him he is not Boniface and sees that he is Nicolas III, a former pope that used the church for financial gain. As they speak Dante becomes angry at what he did and begins to speak badly about the church. Nicolas becomes angry at Dante shouting and kicking his legs and feet fiercely at Dante.Virgil and Dante leave and climb out of the trench to their next destination.

  3. These sinners are punished in a manner that is a curious reversal of baptismal practices of the time: Even the burning feet are from the oil used in baptism instead of the cool sweetness of the holy water.

  4. New Characters we meet in this Canto • Pope Boniface: This is the pope that had Dante exiled from Florence. Although we do not meet him here in the inferno, we do see that he is next in line to be tortured here. • Pope Nicolas III he is the one that is in the stone with flaming feet. We discover that he is a Pope when he speaks of “The Great Mantel” that he wore.
