  1. Annex-20 (IEA - Hydrogen Implementing Agreement) Aim: from materials to devices to products

  2. Annex-20 Activity Report HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 Main Activities Related Activities • Assemble Annex-20 results to compile the final report • Assist in the design of the PoW for the follow-on Annex • Plan next PEC expert meeting (closure A20, kick-off AX) • EstablishSwiss national PEC R&D centre (PEChouse) • Preparation of redesign of EU PEC R&D proposal to FP7 Activity period May 2007 - October 2007

  3. PEC Water-Splitting HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 NREL • Fascination • VIS light below 500 nm can split water • but - water is transparent in this spectrum • hence - light absorption mechanism needed • Solution • electron-hole pair drives chemical redox reaction • Challenges • bad bandgap & positions • fast e-hole recombination • interface charge separation • slow c&v-band reactions

  4. Current A-20 Participation HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 Australia- CSIRO, (Uni QLD, UNSW) Japan - AIST, (Tokyo Uni Science) Korea - POSTECH, KIST, KIER, (KRICT) Netherlands - Delft Uni Tech, (Uni Leiden) (Sweden - Chalmers Uni Tech, (Uni Uppsala) Switzerland - EPFL, Uni Basel, (GSA) (U-Kingdom- Uni Loughborough, (Hydrogen Solar) USA- HNEI, NREL, (CoStateUni, FSEC)

  5. Progress: Materials R&D(I) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 TEC-15 Fe2O3 photo-anodes • Performance enhancement • Underlayers: TiO2 & Ta2O5 on SiO2 substrates • Substrates: Non-noble metals not suitable as alternatives to SnO2:F2 • Surface catalysation: Co & Ir stable, but Ru not • CVD precursors: new metal-organic options • Doping: Ti & Si studied • Surface impregration: Pt & Pd nanoparticles work • Surface morphology: Nanorods very promising (with/without impregnation), refer to next slide EPFL

  6. Progress: Materials R&D(II) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 • Deposition techniques • Spray pyrolysis • Electro-deposition(thermally oxidised) HNEI CSIRO Fe2O3 photo-anodes Best performance 2.5 mA/cm2 (Uni of Loughborough)

  7. Progress: Materials R&D(III) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 N-doping of WO3 was not successful HNEI & NREL WO3 photo-anodes Best performance 3.2 mA/cm2 (HNEI)

  8. Progress: Materials R&D(IV) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 CIGS a-SiC HNEI • needs tandem PEC device with semi-transparent p-type PEC film and bottom PV junction NREL a-SiC & Cu(GS & IGS) photo-cathodes NREL

  9. Progress: Materials R&D(V) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 • New materials • Fe/Ti/Zr (60:10:30) • CuBi2O4 AIST AIST Binary & ternary metal-oxides possibility for novel p-type & n-type photo- electrodes

  10. Progress: Materials R&D(VI) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 Nanodisk arrays (using lithography) Au, Ag, Pt, Pd Chalmers Chalmers Noble metal nanoparticles History of number of topical publications localised surface plasmons in Pt & Pd nanoparticles on TiO2and Fe2O3 lead to e-hole pair decay

  11. Progress: Systems R&D(I) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 KIER TiO2/Ti photoanode KIER Bio-promoted PEC water-splitting (using enzymes) Pt Interesting observation: improved performance with concentrated light System performance STH  6-9% ! (KIER)

  12. Progress: Systems R&D(II) HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 Integrated PV-PEC water-splitting cell KIST System performance STH = 9.3% ! (KIST) A 12cm x 12cm tandem PEC cell using a Si-PV cell behind a nickel ferrite (FeNiOx) photoanode thin-film for O2-evolution and a Pt mesh as cathode (1M-NaOH)

  13. New PEC Annex Proposal HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 NREL “New Materials for PEC H2 Production” • Objectives: Extend field of expertise in materials theory, synthesis & characterisation, & standardise performancedata (incl. round-robin testing and database management) • Four Subtasks: Materials “theory”, “synthesis”, “characterisation”, & “info. coordination / database”) • Researchinterest groups: AU, AT, CH, FR, DE, IL, JP, KR, MX, NL, NZ, PL, PT, SG, ES, SW, CH, UK, US

  14. Dr Eric Miller - OA of Annex HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 • PhD, MS, BS in Electrical and Applied & Engineering Physics • Director of Thin Films Laboratory of Hawaii Natural Energy Institute • Expertise: Novel opto-electronic devices for energy conversion • R&D focus: Development of thin-films for PEC, PV and fuel cells • Patents: On multi-junction PEC • Others: Has an extensive list of publications and is often engaged as chairman of key conferences highly recommended ! (by PEC experts and current OA)

  15. ExCo Attention HIA Executive Committee Meeting, Montecatini, 7-9/Nov/07 Issues in Need of Support • Approval of the Draft Program-Of-Work for newPEC Annex so that this Annex can start operation during the first quarter of 2008 • Approval of the proposed Operating Agent, Dr Eric Miller (HNEI), to lead the new PEC Annex many thanks for all of your support throughout the past decade !
