  1. CSPP’s 12-Month Program: Implications for International Students Presented by the Mike Kegler, SEVIS & Technology Manager, International Student Adviser, Office of International Affairs (OIA) The University of Chicago

  2. Extension • Once you are accepted into the 12-course program, you will have to submit the AFR form to OIA: • http://internationalaffairs.uchicago.edu/studentextension • Karin will complete page two. You complete page three, attach financial documentation, and submit it to OIA. • If everything is complete, your new I-20 will be issued within one week.

  3. CPT • The 12-Month program is eligible for so-called “Degree-Based” CPT • Prior to starting the internship, submit the following to OIA: • Job offer (using template from http://internationalaffairs.uchicago.edu/cpt) • Letter from CS department stating that the internship will partially or fully satisfy the requirement. • If the request is complete, OIA will issue a new I-20 for you with CPT recommendation on the 3rd page. You can use this I-20 to apply for an SSN (if needed) and to show your employer that you are eligible to work. • Once you have satisfied the degree requirement, if otherwise eligible, you can apply for course-based CPT by enrolling in CSPP 57002 - Independent Study.

  4. Registration • Students become eligible for a vacation quarter after completing three quarters of full-time study, if they plan on returning after the break. • For most students, this is Summer quarter. • If you withdraw during a break quarter, your I-20 will have to be shortened to the end of your last quarter of attendance. • If you require less than a full course of study in your last quarter, you can apply for a reduced course load.

  5. OPT • You can apply for OPT 90 days or less before your program end date and up to 60 days after. • OPT is recommended by OIA but authorized by USCIS. • Standard processing time is 90 days. • Once your application has been accepted by USCIS, it is very difficult to modify your requested dates. • You cannot work until you are approved, receive your card, and the start date on the card has been reached. • Read more at http://internationalaffairs.uchicago.edu/opt
