  1. Operating systems

  2. What is operating system ? • Operating system is a collection of programs , which computer needs to work properly . Without operating system computer isn’t able to do anything.

  3. OS tasks • Managing computer resources like memory , CPU time , peripherial devices • Creating abstraction layers (e.g you don’t see disk clusters , but you see single file) • Automatization of some tasks • Communication with user • Handling protocols . (e.g TCP/IP or FTP) • Executing another programs .

  4. Main parts of OS • Kernel – its „heart” of all systems. It must be always loaded into memory. Kernel fault causes fault of whole system. • Shell – part of systems which communicates with user • File system – method of reading and writing files to media (like hard disk)

  5. Most popular operating systems For Pc (Intel compatible): • UNIX • Systems based on UNIX (Linux,Solaris,FreeBSD,NetBSD) • Windows For Macintosh ( PowerPC): • Apple Macintosh operating systems (MacOS) • Linux For PocketPC: • Windows Mobile • PalmOS

  6. UNIX • Written in 1969 in Bell Labs in New Jersey • UNIX can be use on many computer architectures • There are lots of systems based on it • Fast, safe and stable

  7. UNIX-based systems • Linux • Hurd • Solaris • BSD • QNX

  8. LINUX • Linux is the most popular UNIX-based system • Its kernel was written in 1991 by Linus Torvalds • Has own GUI and window managers (KDE,Gnome) • There are many Linux distributions ,most of them are free • It’s posssible to run Linux without installing it – using LiveCD distribution • There are lots of free software for Linux • Name „Linux” means: Linux Is Not UniX

  9. MS-DOS operating system MS-DOS interface

  10. MS-DOS • MS-DOS was developed by Bill Gates in 1986 and was first operating system for personal computer available for general • It is still popular – many people use DOS to control their old computers and in some schools students learn how to use it. • Still doesn’t support many hardware

  11. Windows operating system • Windows was continuation of MS-DOS ,but the main difference between them is that Windows has a GUI – is more user-friendly • First versions of Windows was 16-bit and single-task , the first 32-bit,multi-task Windows was Windows 95 released in 1994 year • I’ts the most popular system in people’ houses

  12. Windows operating system Windows desktop

  13. History of windows

  14. MacOS – system for Apple Macintosh • It was first GUI-based operating system avaiable for all people • Used for PowerPC architecture ,but today there are versions for PC • Has a good , user-friendly interface; • Isn’t very popular ,because of high price of Mac computer.

  15. MacOS X desktop

  16. Summary • Operating system is very important • There are many kinds of systems, depending on user’s preferences and necessities
