  1. COOP Guidelines Dates, Lates, Absences, Times, Hours, etc

  2. When do I start my placement? • Your start date at your placement should be the Wednesday of the 2nd week of the Semester at the latest. But this date will vary according to..... • How quickly you complete your pre-placement booklet? • Whether or not a placement has been confirmed/arranged for you? • Whether or not your placement is ready for you?

  3. The longer it takes to start at your placement, the less hours you will accumulate!!! • Regardless, you should not begin at your work placement, until a Coop teacher has signed your pre-placement ‘to-do checklist’ and a WEA agreement has been completed & signed.

  4. When is the last day at placement? • Your last date at your placement should be the Friday before exam week at the end of the Semester. But this date may vary according to..... • How many hours you have accumulated at that time. (students may need to work during the exam week to recoup any hours are short). • Whether or not your placement needs you to work some extra hours?

  5. What are the procedures if I’m going to be late or absent for work? • You must call your employer immediately. • They are depending on you to be there like a regular employee!! • You must also notify the school Coop Office - (613) 962-9295 ext 2131. • Leave a message if you do not talk to a Coop teacher.

  6. How many times can I be late? • NOT VERY OFTEN!! • Your employer will be sure to let you know if it is becoming a problem & you need to take steps to ensure it does not occur regularly. • If you have personal/family issues then you must discuss the problem with your Coop teacher.

  7. How many times can I be absent? • NOT VERY OFTEN!! • 3-4 days Maximum. • Your employer will be sure to let you know if it is becoming a problem & you need to take steps to ensure it does not occur regularly. • If you have personal/family issues then you must discuss the problem with your Coop teacher. • Remember, the more days you miss, the more hours you lose. You do not receive credits unless your hours expectations are met!!

  8. What do I do when my bus is cancelled due to bad weather? • If you take a bus you do not have to find your own way to placement. • Be absolutely sure you call your employer immediately & let them know!!!! • Days missed due to bus cancellations do not affect your hours requirements. • If you walk to school, then you are required to attend your placement that day. Follow the same steps you would normally follow to get to work.

  9. What do I do when schools are closed due to bad weather? • You are not required to attend your work placement.

  10. When should I arrive & leave my placement? • Depends on how many Coop credits you are taking. • Most placements will begin and end with the same times as the school class schedule. Period 1 - 8:15 - 9:36 Period 2 - 9:45 - 11:00 Lunch - 11:00 - 11:55 Period 4 - 11:55 - 1:10 Period 5 - 1:17 - 2:32

  11. When should I arrive & leave my placement? • However, not all businesses operate on the school schedule • Flexibility in determining start & finish times will be necessary. • In conjunction with the employers availability & needs.

  12. Regardless, it must be communicated to your employer what his/her expectations are with regards to start & finish times. Keep in mind that Coop is most concerned about ‘consistency’ & ‘meeting hours requirements’. When should I arrive & leave my placement?

  13. When should I arrive & leave my placement? • Keep in mind when agreeing to a start & finish time... • When you need to get back to regular school classes? • When you need to get back tocatch a bus home?

  14. COOP HOURS • EXAMPLE • All students should aim to work at least 68 days in a semester. • A 2-credit Coop needs to work AVERAGE2.5 hours a day or 12.5 hours a week. • REGARDLESS of when they are required to start & finish a placement.

  15. IMPORTANT!!!! • The key to determining Start & Finish Times is open communication with… • Your employer • Your Coop teacher. • If you haven’t determined your start & finish times in the 1st week of placement….. • YOU HAD BETTER FIGURE IT OUT!!
