  1. EA at CSU - A Journey • What we trying to solve • Where we are on the journey Mike Rebbechi Executive Director, IT Charles Sturt University

  2. The Premise for EA at CSU “An intelligent organisation will be a successful organisation” EA for CSU is not an IT thing – it is a business thing

  3. Things we hear around our campuses! What in the hell is IT up to now! What would the Senior Executive know about the issue anyway? The problem with this place is that you never know what is going on! That decision has a direct bearing on me! - If only they had asked! Facilities are hopeless – all we want is a few walls removed! The bloody library – they are so demanding What half wit decide that!

  4. Some things I think we need to accept! We rarely know enough to know how little we know Regulators and decision makers very often don’t know much about the issue they are deciding upon We mostly under-estimate the complexity of our organisations Very few if any of us know much about the business of others in our organisation We rarely know who else is worrying about the same things we are worrying about Many of our institutions are managed to an alarming extent by “gut feel” The more complex the organisation the less accurate is the gut

  5. The Solution – biting the bullet! • We all have to stop “side stepping” the issue of complexity – we need to stop trying to find work-arounds • We need to accept that our organisations are complex • We need to accept that informed decision making is not possible without a thorough knowledge of the organisation • We need to convince decision makers that EA can improve their decision making.

  6. CSU’s approach to EA "If you hold a cat by the tail you learn things you cannot learn any other way.“ Mark Twain You get scratched and spat upon – but you do learn a hell of a lot about cats

  7. So what is EA for CSU? EA for CSU is about gathering, documenting, modelling and understanding the organisation

  8. Our Dream • An enterprise modeller will sit with the Senior Executive of the University when it is making decisions. • Competitive budget processes will be a thing of the past • A new Vice Chancellor will consult the enterprise model before making a change

  9. Is EA actually a new concept? Of Course Not! • Suzuki – NPC address on Wednesday 25th October • An architect and spaces • Engineers and structural elements • All of them want to know how everything fits together • We have always produced artefacts • The more complex the object the more detailed the artefacts.

  10. Will EA have an effect on the Organisation? It will change behaviours of our decision makers It will change the behaviours of our regulators It will change organisational structures It will change the IT organisation as we know it
