  8. What do human beings need to live? • Imagine you are David Attenborough. • Describe what human beings need to live and grow. • For example: • What do human beings need to survive? • What things help us to grow physically? • What things help us to succeed in life?

  9. Human rights • All human beings, have similar basic needs: nutritious food, health care, shelter, education, protection from harm and more.

  10. The Articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were set up to protect people . In the UK they are included as part of our laws. You should be able to explain what the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is

  11. Human rights • Human beings need these thing to live and grow and to be human. • Needs are different to wants. Wants are not necessary for a person to survive, grow and develop. • Everyone of us has the right to have these needs fulfilled. • These rights are called human rights.

  12. In 1945, after the horrors of World War II, an international organization was established, the United Nations. It was dedicated to maintaining peace and security and to solving humanitarian problems. So in 1948, they developed a code of conduct for the protection of basic human rights to be used across the world. This was called the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is not legally binding, but its content has been incorporated into the laws of many countries and it has become a standard measure of human rights across the world. However, there are still many countries and people who abuse these rights.

Your rights, my rights • Human rights support all areas of our lives, for example: • Right to education • Right to have your own thoughts, beliefs and religion • Right to vote in elections once you reach the voting age • Right not to be required to do forced labour and not to be treated as a slave • You can think of human rights as a set of rules that state what we all need to live and grow, and how we should treat each other.

  28. Important - all human rights are yours • In reality you don’t ever have to choose your human rights. • Human rights belong to everyone from when they are born. • Although they can sometimes be restricted, human rights can never be taken away from you.

Using the information given; • Design a leaflet to illustrate the most important articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. • You will need to explain: • What the Universal Declaration of Human Rights • actually is • Why it is important • Why it was set up • What the articles are. • Use pictures to help explain your ideas.

  31. What have we learnt? • That human rights belong to everybody. • That every human right is important and needed for human beings to live and grow.
