  2. Baskets have been found in every culture across the globe • Some of the baskets were functional but many were used for adornment, ritual, culture religion or sacred purposes.

  3. Who makes baskets? • Each culture distinctly has a way of incorporating personal artistry and individual or group aesthetics

  4. Artisans and craftpersons take pride in their ability to maintain the history and culture found in their basketry • Artic and subartictribes • Native American Indians • Gullah Islands • Mexico • Africa • India • Australians • Just to name a few…

  5. Methods of weaving baskets: • "Coiled" basketry: uses grasses and rushes • "Plaiting" basketry: braiding materials together • "Twining" basketry: two or more flexible elements cross each other • "Wicker" and "Splint" basketry: canes of split wood or bamboo woven together

  6. “coiled” fabric technique • 1. Using the cotton basket core begin wrapping 2 “ fabric strip around the first few inches of basket core. Use the tapestry needle to help guide the fabric through.

  9. “coiled” fabric technique • As you work you may incorporate objects such as beads, feathers and trinkets to emphasis your culture. When complete tie a knot in the end of the fabric. You may then also draw on the basket using marker to create icons or add words.
