  1. Layer 5 the Session Layer Network Fundamentals

  2. Session Layer • The session layer provides the mechanism for opening, closing and managing a session between end-user application processes, i.e., a semi-permanent dialogue. • In case of a connection loss this protocol may try to recover the connection. If a connection is not used for a long period, the session-layer protocol may close it and re-open it.

  3. Full Duplex, Half-Duplex, and Simplex • A duplexsystem allows devices to communicate with one another in both directions simultaneously

  4. Half-Duplex • A half-duplexsystem provides communication in both directions, but only one direction at a time. Typically, once a party begins receiving a signal, it must wait for the transmitter to stop transmitting, before replying.

  5. Simplex • Simplex communication refers to communication that occurs in one direction only. • Can you think of an everyday example of this?Hint: It pre-dates television.

  6. Services • Authentication • Permissions • Session Restoration – Takes a snapshot of the current state and uses it for restarting the execution in case of failure
