  1. Making college/university globally competitive- a long journey. Why & How? To nurture leaders to manage professional affairs ably at national/international levels Are we globally competitive?

  2. Dream big, think great out of box, go global, beyond conventions Can we win? We have potentials but that is not enough. We need visions and methods. Only good colleges are preferred by students and faculty.

  3. Money and Men are necessary but not enough. Colleges have to be strategic • Nations are prosperous where colleges are world class. • Colleges are world class where professors are first grade • Low aim is a crime • Professors decide the level of an institution • 8 out of 10 world best are American universities. How? They are Research based. • China is moving fast, it wasbehind India.

  4. Many colleges are spending money yet quality is poor. • They need world proven visions & missions, systems & procedures, Policies & practices • Vector Direction should be right. • Arjuna hit the eye, not because of high speed • Students want world class education, they are ready to pay. Where are the colleges/ universities? • Thousands of students are going abroad • Foreign universities are coming.

  5. Shall we import knowledge/technology from abroad or produce? • Strategies in colleges needed to innovate, create, discover, and not mug up. • Do we create followers & copy cats? • Shall we create leaders or followers? • Nations strength is measured in world class institutes, that germinate new knowledge • Collective ambition of professors, shared vision, “Jidda” in Marathi -needed.

  6. Do professors fire imagination of young students? Are they spark plugs? • Good professors are scientists, discoverers, innovators • They are leaders, idea generators who create tomorrows leaders today in colleges. • They are GURUs not simple teachers. • They have to be self regulated, controlled • They shape future generations

  7. What do the foreign colleges teach? Do our colleges have all the limbs for legitimate functions • Do they have Technology incubation centre, patent and IPR centre, technology transfer centre, Research Park, they teach tomorrow’s knowledge today, Can we have them? • Yahoo, Google, CISCO companies are products of Stanford university • 3000 companies owe their origin to MIT • Can we do this? Why not? • We need visions & systems. we have potentials

Governance has to be scientific, less bureaucracy, more academic freedom • Academic culture matters more. • Economy needs new knowledge, technology to be globally competitive. • Industrycannot do all the research they need. • They will support research in colleges. • We have to win their confidence • Professors matters most • Do we tap alumni support?

  9. Courses syllabi should not be diverse from opportunities in world • We need to redesign them. They should be locally fit so also internationally • Use new technology in class rooms. • You lead when you have passion to develop • Do you energies, empower students in each lecture? • Are you a light house for society/economy • Are you enterprising in nature?

Is college a black box which consumes more and produces less & irrelevant • We need to optimize the processes • Let us be extrovert and not introvert • Let us study what our counterparts in world teach. • Let us develop collaborationwith many • Network with world best • What is our role model? World best chembridge? • College should change with time/ autonomy

Talent pool is good, ample, need grooming • Let us tap energy, capacities with in us become globally competitiveprofessors • World is changing fast, we cannot afford to be stationary • Let us be an engine and not a bogie • Mediocrity is too costly. Can India Rise? • Let us win in brain race, knowledgerace • Let eachcontribute to raise knowledgelevel . • Thank you
